About Trice
My work with parents and children primarily reflects the principles of Waldorf early childhood education and the practices of Emmi Pikler, the Hungarian pediatrician known for her respectful approach to child care. Additionally I have studied therapeutic puppetry for young children through Juniper Tree School of Puppetry Arts, children’s music and parenting support through Musikgarten and Simplicity Parenting, and have co-edited A Warm and Gentle Welcome, a collection of essays on the early years published by the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America. My formal education includes a Waldorf birth-to-seven teacher training certificate from Sophia’s Hearth, Keene, NH, a master’s degree in writing from Emerson College, Boston, and a bachelor’s in philosophy and psychology from Wheaton College, Norton, MA. Before delving into the fascinating world of early childhood development, I was a community relations manager in educational and health care settings, a freelance writer and editor, and a jazz singer.
I’ve noticed that careful observers of young children tend to arrive at strikingly similar conclusions. Even as they work to understand child development generally, these observers are respectful of each child as a unique and multi-faceted human being. They know that supporting children means providing opportunities for imaginative play, self-initiated exploration, movement, and time outdoors away from screens. They see how bonding and belonging are aided by loving limits, clear guidance, comforting rhythms and the age-old art of storytelling. Adults open to discovering the wonders of early childhood—and who are willing to strive to be worthy models for children—are poised to be able to care for children in a way that is nurturing and engaged. ‘Strive’ is the key word.
Most recently I completed the coursework for a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree from Antioch New England—with the thesis now in process. Stay tuned as I share with you my explorations into the creative and healing world of gentle puppetry for young children, and to remain updated on Pleasant Street Parent-Child offerings.
